Library Celebrated JK Rowling’s Birthday

On31st July, in an innovative effort to encourage reading in the school, the library celebrated JK Rowling’s birthday. For the event, the four MYP seventh grade classes were “sorted” into the four Hogwarts houses, after which they were taken to the Multipurpose Hall for an hour of fun and games. From the beginning, the students were drawn into the magic of Harry Potter with a screening of the original trailer for the first movie. Their knowledge of the Harry Potter universe was then tested with a quiz. Each section, or house, was awarded points for correct answers, but penalized for disruptions. After the quiz, the students participated in a “rename-the-book” competition. In order to emphasize the importance of reading, a presentation was given on how books can make every day an adventure. The event closed with prizes distributed to winners of the bookmark-making competition and, of course, the awarding of the House Cup. Though it was quite a close call, Ravenclaw was the final victor, presented with books, certificates and a goblet overflowing with candy. Celebrating the birthday of one of the world’s most beloved authors really helped to encourage a spirit of reading in every student present.
